Amazon Prime Video has officially found its Ghost of Sparta for the upcoming live-action *God of War* series. In a move that brings a familiar face back to the franchise, the mantle of Kratos will be taken up by actor Ryan Hurst, who is no stranger to the recent Norse sagas.
Hurst, perhaps best known to mainstream audiences for his role as Opie Winston on *Sons of Anarchy*, has strong roots in the world of video game acting. He previously earned critical acclaim and a BAFTA nomination for voicing the intimidating God of Thunder, Thor, in 2022’s *God of War Ragnarök*. This unique casting choice means Hurst is swapping Mjolnir for the Blades of Chaos as he steps into the sandals previously filled by game actor Christopher Judge.
The series is confirmed to adapt the foundational Norse storyline from the 2018 entry, centering on Kratos and his son, Atreus, as they undertake a perilous journey to scatter the ashes of their deceased wife and mother. Amazon has already placed a vote of confidence in the ambitious project, ordering two seasons of the show. Veteran showrunner Ronald D. Moore (of *Outlander* and *Battlestar Galactica* fame) is set to helm the adaptation, which begins filming in Vancouver this March. *God of War* is poised to be Amazon’s next massive video game adaptation success, building on the momentum generated by hits like *Fallout*.
