RAM Shortages May Lead To More Expensive TVs And Devices, Warns Samsung
The persistent global supply chain shortage for memory chips (RAM) continues to be a major headache for the tech industry, a problem increasingly amplified by the colossal, escalating demand from companies developing advanced AI technologies. While the consequences for smartphone production have been widely discussed, Samsung Electronics co-CEO T M Roh has issued a broad warning that the ripple effect will hit far beyond mobile devices. Roh indicated that essential consumer items, including smart TVs and major home appliances, will soon face severe shortages and potential price hikes.
Speaking on the challenges, Roh emphasized that the current component crisis is “unprecedented” and stressed that no major corporation, regardless of size, is immune to the consequences. As the dominant global manufacturer of televisions, Samsung understands this pressure keenly, with Roh stating that the effect of component scarcity on consumer pricing will be “inevitable.” This impending rise in hardware costs presents an interesting complication for the gaming sector. Microsoft, for instance, has heavily relied on Samsung smart TVs as a core component of its “This Is an Xbox” strategy, allowing users to stream Game Pass titles directly. Increased manufacturing costs for these popular smart TV hubs could potentially impact that accessibility push.
