The Fable Reboot Is Doing Away With One Of The Series’ Signature Features

The recent Xbox Developer Direct provided the most substantial update yet on the highly anticipated *Fable* reboot, marking the franchise’s return 15 years after *Fable 3*. While fans eagerly absorbed the new footage, Fable General Manager and Director Ralph Fulton confirmed that one of the series’ most recognizable mechanics will not be making the jump to the new title.

The feature being retired is the iconic character “morphing.” In the original trilogy, a player’s moral alignment—whether they chose the path of light or darkness—physically manifested on their hero, transforming virtuous characters into angels or wicked ones into horned, devilish figures.

Fulton explained in an interview with IGN that this system, which was central to the identity of the old games, no longer aligns with the new *Fable*’s philosophical foundation. The primary reason for the cut is the rejection of an “objective good and evil” scale. The previous games relied on players slotting into a predetermined moral position, which dictated their visual transformation. The reboot, however, is moving toward a more nuanced approach. Fulton noted that the new morality system dictates that the player is “different things to different people,” meaning a fixed, linear visual alignment chart wouldn’t make logical sense in this new Albion.
