*The Elder Scrolls Online* is gearing up for a fundamental overhaul in 2026, marking a significant departure from its established monetization structure. Developer ZeniMax Online Studios is making a full commitment to a seasonal content model, guaranteeing that all future major content updates will be delivered to players completely free of charge.
For years, *ESO* adhered to the standard MMO playbook, relying on predictable yearly paid “Chapters.” These expansive releases often brought sweeping additions, including new regions of Tamriel, robust story arcs, and major system changes like new classes, alongside smaller, optional paid DLCs throughout the year.
The studio announced in 2024 that the traditional Chapter releases would be retired, designating 2025 as a crucial transition period. Following a recent developer livestream and subsequent Q&A, ZOS has now detailed the ambitious plans for 2026. The shift will usher in a steady stream of features, including battle passes, more experimental seasonal content, fresh narrative chapters, solo dungeons, a specialized PvP progression system, and significant class reworks designed to revitalize gameplay.
Looking ahead, ZOS also highlighted critical long-term goals aimed at improving the community experience. These include finally implementing cross-play functionality across platforms, as well as delivering much-requested quality-of-life features such as guild mail and guild housing.
