The Fable Reboot Is Doing Away With One Of The Series’ Signature Features
The recent Xbox Developer Direct offered fans a highly anticipated update on the *Fable* reboot, marking the franchise’s first major entry 15 years after the original trilogy concluded with *Fable 3*. While the new footage showcased a gorgeous return to Albion, the developers confirmed that one of the series’ most recognizable mechanics—character morphing—will not feature in the new game.
In the original titles, players’ moral choices directly impacted their physical appearance, causing heroes to sprout halos and villains to grow devilish horns as they traveled along the objective good-vs.-evil scale. However, according to Ralph Fulton, General Manager and Director of *Fable*, that rigid system no longer aligns with the team’s creative vision.
Speaking about the decision, Fulton explained that the new *Fable* ditches the premise of “objective good and evil.” Because the classic morphing feature relied on the player existing somewhere along that fixed scale, it simply doesn’t work for the upcoming game. Instead, the reboot’s morality system will be far more nuanced and contextual. Fulton stated that in this new Albion, players are perceived differently based on what individual non-player characters choose to value. Since your character is never “absolutely” good or evil but rather different things to different people, the straightforward visual transformation of morphing had to be scrapped to support this modern, relativistic approach to role-playing.
