Fable Is Going Deeper With Its Morality Scale

The original *Fable* trilogy cemented its legacy with a straightforward, binary morality system, forcing players into clearly defined roles as either hero or villain. However, Playground Games is charting a far more intricate path for the upcoming reboot, aiming to move beyond the simple good versus evil paradigm and allowing players to craft truly nuanced characters.

Fable general manager and director Ralph Fulton recently shed light on the design change during an interview with Xbox Wire. Fulton acknowledged that while the original games are inextricably linked to objective morality, he stressed that both video game narrative systems and modern societal views on ethics have advanced. Because of this evolution, the new system aims to represent morality as subjective. According to Fulton, there is “no objective good, there is no objective evil” in this new Albion; judgments are based solely on the subjective opinions of the populace and what they choose to value.

Crucially, this is not just a standard sliding scale. Fulton clarified that players’ reputations will be earned dynamically and locally. Actions are only registered and judged if they are explicitly witnessed by an NPC. This implementation means the player can develop significantly different reputations across the map. The Hero of Albion might be revered as a benevolent figure in one village while simultaneously known as a notorious scoundrel in another, based entirely on the deeds they have performed in view of those respective communities.
